The Souriris

After the death of my very dear Russel, I didn't have the energy or imagination to create anything.  It took a long while before I could continue with a project I began while she was still alive:  a flying little rodent with a nest full of newborn babies.  For me, this little rodent symbolizes hope, new beginnings and Mother Earth's ability to adapt and continue to create no matter what.  A mouse?  A gerbil?  Not really.  "Souris" is "mouse" is French and "sourire" is "smile" in the same language, and so this flying critter is a new species called a
Souriris.

She's created in a honey brown mohair with a darker backing for the body, with a white synthetic stomach and an upholstery fabric tail.  The ears are ultrasuede with safety-lock eyes and an embroidery floss nose.  The wings are purchased feather wings that have been hand-colored.  Souriris' paws are needle-felted over wire and she's entirely wired and poseable, softly stuffed with polyester fiberfil and lots of love.  Her body is about 4 inches long not counting the tail.

And here she is with her nest full of three newborn babies...

The trio of pink newborn babies is made of Fimo while the tree and its base are natural wood. The nest is a real one that fell out of a tree during the winter.  Each baby is different, but the largest is about 1 1/2 inches, the nest being about 2 1/2 inches across at the opening.

While Souriris and her family are a prototype, please see Junebug below who's looking for a safe place to relocate her little family.

And here she is with her nest in a "tree".  Her three babes are adorably wee, safe in their rescued real bird's nest.
